“What worries me is the people and how they will protect their votes” — Peter Obi speaks on 2027 election
Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi has expressed concern about the 2027 general election, saying his major worry is not the eventual outcome but whether Nigerians will be able to protect their votes.
Obi spoke on Sunday during a visit to Ogugu in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, where he joined a thank-you tour organised for the party’s Kogi East senatorial candidate, Peter Ameh.

Addressing supporters, the former Anambra State governor called for a free, fair and credible election while urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure the wishes of voters are respected.
Peter Obi speaks on protecting votes in 2027
Speaking about his concerns ahead of the election, Obi said, “I am not worried about what the outcome of the 2027 general election will be. What worries me is the people and how they will protect their votes on election day.”
He stressed that votes cast by Nigerians must count, while pointing to hunger and poverty as some of the challenges requiring urgent attention.
Obi added, “This time around, our votes must count. Nigerians must elect those who will lead them.”
He also urged Nigerians to assess candidates based on competence, capacity, character, compassion and commitment to national development.
Obi expresses concern over Nigerians’ living conditions
Beyond the election, Obi expressed concern about conditions in rural communities and the difficulties facing farmers despite the country’s agricultural potential.
“As I moved around, I felt pain seeing how Nigerians are living,” he said.
Ameh similarly urged voters to remain vigilant during the 2027 elections while highlighting poor roads, healthcare facilities and other infrastructure challenges confronting communities in Kogi East.
