“What we discovered about a guy who borrowed money from almost everyone in our area” — Lady reveals

A social media post describing how a man deceived neighbours and friends into donating money for a fake medical emergency has sparked heated reactions online.

The story, shared by a lady on X, detailed how residents in her area reportedly contributed different amounts after a young man claimed his mother needed urgent surgery in hospital.

According to her, many people sympathised with the emotional appeal and willingly sent financial support. Some allegedly contributed as little as ₦2,000, while others gave as much as ₦50,000.

She added that one woman in their compound even withdrew money from her thrift savings because she believed the situation was genuine.

The lady wrote: “A guy in my area borrowed money from almost everyone last year. He claimed his mother was in hospital and needed urgent surgery.

People chipped in, some sent ₦2,000, others ₦50,000. One woman in our compound even withdrew money from her thrift savings because she felt sorry for him. Everyone was praying for his ‘mom.’”

However, the situation reportedly took a dramatic turn two weeks later after videos from the man’s birthday celebration surfaced online.

According to the post, the birthday party allegedly took place in Lekki and featured expensive drinks, loud music, a hotel stay, and a brand-new iPhone.

The revelation reportedly shocked many residents who had contributed financially out of sympathy.

She continued: “Two weeks later, someone posted videos of his birthday party in Lekki. Champagne, a new iPhone, a hotel room, loud music. The worst part?

His mother was perfectly healthy. I later saw her buying tomatoes outside as if nothing had happened.”

The lady further claimed that when some contributors confronted the man over the alleged deception, he showed no remorse.

Instead, she alleged that he laughed off the accusations and blamed people for being too trusting.

When people confronted him, he laughed and said: ‘If you people were wise, you wouldn’t believe every sad story online.’”

The incident has since generated widespread debate on social media, with many users expressing anger over the alleged manipulation of people’s emotions for financial gain.

Some users argued that economic hardship has pushed many people into desperate behaviour, while others insisted that exploiting sympathy, especially by lying about a parent’s health, crossed a serious moral line.

Reacting to the situation, the lady questioned how anyone could comfortably fabricate such a story involving their own mother.

To this day, some people still defend him because ‘hustle is hard.’ Maybe I’m too emotional, but I feel that once someone can comfortably lie about their own mother for money, nothing is off limits anymore. Would you forgive someone like that?”
