President Goodluck Jonathan’s government introduced an anti-gay law in Nigeria in January 2014 which attracts a 14-year prison penalty for anyone convicted of having sex with members of the same sex.

In December 2019, the Nigerian government put the law to the test for the first time when 47 men captured by police in a Lagos hotel the previous year were charged in court, accused of publicly exhibiting affection for members of the same sex.
