“My decision to reposition Nigeria’s oil and gas are beginning to bear fruit” — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said reforms introduced by his administration to reposition Nigeria’s oil and gas sector are beginning to attract fresh investments and unlock previously undeveloped projects.

Tinubu stated this while announcing an $800 million Final Investment Decision (FID) by AMNI International and TotalEnergies to develop the Ima Gas Field, which was discovered in 1973 but has remained undeveloped for more than five decades.

According to the President, his administration has introduced a series of Presidential Directives and Executive Orders aimed at making investment in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry more competitive.

He said the measures were also designed to reduce the cost and time required to develop projects, provide greater certainty for investors and increase the value derived from the country’s natural resources.

Tinubu said one of the reforms introduced specific incentives to encourage the development of onshore and shallow-water gas projects that had remained dormant for years.

He described the $800 million investment in the Ima Gas Field as evidence of the impact of the reforms.

For Nigerians, this means work for our engineers, technicians and contractors. It means opportunities for Nigerian businesses, jobs and economic activity in our host communities, and more export earnings for our country,” Tinubu said.

The President noted that AMNI International, a Nigerian company, holds the majority interest in the project.

He added that about 60 per cent of the development workforce is expected to be sourced from host communities.

According to Tinubu, the Ima Gas Field is expected to produce about 350 million cubic feet of gas per day at peak production.

He said the field is also projected to supply about one-third of the gas required for the planned expansion of Nigeria LNG.

Tinubu said the development aligns with his administration’s objective of moving Nigeria’s oil and gas resources from potential to actual production while creating jobs, increasing incomes and stimulating economic activity.

We have more to unlock,” the President added.
