“No rest until clock-out” — Lady shares harsh lesson from first UK hotel job

A Nigerian woman has sparked reactions online after recounting the culture shock she experienced while working her first job in the United Kingdom as a pot washer in a luxury hotel kitchen.

The lady, identified simply as Chi, shared the experience in a viral social media post on Monday, explaining how she mistakenly believed finishing her duties early would earn her time to rest during her shift.

Hard work took unexpected turn

According to her, she completed a five-hour pile of dirty pots and plates within three hours because she wanted to impress her supervisors with what she described as her “hardworking Naija spirit.”

However, moments after relaxing beside the dishwasher to observe chefs at work, a senior kitchen supervisor reportedly approached her and assigned several additional cleaning duties across the kitchen.

“I changed tissue rolls, replaced soaps, swept already clean floors and even cleaned bin trolleys outside in the cold. Every single minute was accounted for,” she said.

“I realised quickly that in the UK, if they pay you for six hours, they expect you to work for six hours. There is no resting because you finished early,” she added.

Immigrants react online

Her story has since generated conversations among immigrants abroad, with many agreeing that workplace culture in the UK differs greatly from Nigeria.

Similar conversations emerged in 2024 when several African migrants in Europe shared experiences about strict workplace systems and time management expectations abroad.

Chi advised new immigrants to understand the system quickly to avoid unnecessary stress at work.

Don’t stand idle. Find something to clean or organise. The moment they catch you resting, they will give you more work,” she warned.
