Liverpool 2-0 Everton: Salah secures controversial Merseyside derby victory with penalty

Everton frown at the controversial decision of the referee after a rough tackle against Beto by Liverpool's Konate, even when Konate already had a yellow card, and Everton one-man down.

Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory against Everton at Anfield, in a controversial Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Everton were forced to play with ten men for the majority of the game after Ashley Young received a second yellow card in the 39th minute.

Despite being a man down, Everton held their ground and maintained a goalless draw throughout the first 45 minutes.

However, the game took another shape when Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate, who already had a yellow card, tripped Beto during Everton’s counter-attack.

To the surprise of Everton, the referee did not show a second yellow card to Konate, and Liverpool’s manager Jurgen Klopp promptly substituted him with Joel Matip.

The Toffees had hoped that Konate should have been sent out, after preventing what they believed would have been a goal.

Meanwhile, moments later, Everton’s Michael Keane was judged to have handled the ball with his hand inside his 18-yard box area after a VAR check.

This decision awarded Liverpool a penalty, which Mohamed Salah converted to break the ice for his side. Salah added a second goal and the last in the game during the injury time, to secure Liverpool’s win.

Everton left the pitch furious with the referee over the controversial decision of not awarding a red card to Konate.
