Alvarez Atletico saga reopens Arsenal’s transfer hopes

Julian Alvarez’s uncertain future at Atletico Madrid has given Arsenal fresh reason to monitor the situation, with the Premier League club still interested in the Argentina international.

The 26-year-old has been at the centre of one of the summer’s most contentious transfer sagas after expressing a desire to leave Atletico and join Barcelona. However, the Spanish club have remained firm in their refusal to sanction his departure.

The dispute became even more visible on Sunday when Atletico supporters booed Alvarez during his return to club action in a 2-2 draw with Villarreal.

Arsenal waiting for opportunity

Arsenal have maintained an interest in Alvarez throughout the summer and regard the forward as one of their preferred targets.

However, their pursuit has largely remained on the sidelines because Alvarez’s priority has reportedly been a move to Barcelona. The Gunners have therefore been prepared to wait and assess whether circumstances change before making a serious approach.

Those circumstances may now be shifting.

The growing tension between Alvarez and Atletico could potentially create an opening for Arsenal, although Barcelona remain the player’s preferred destination and Atletico have shown little indication that they are prepared to sell.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo recently insisted that the club intended to keep the forward.

“I said he wouldn’t be sold, he’s our player and an important part of our team. We like that he’s with us and think he will have a magnificent season,” Cerezo said.

Atletico face difficult decision

Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most important attacking players.

His current situation, however, leaves Atletico facing a difficult balancing act. Keeping an unhappy player could create further friction with supporters, while selling him would mean losing a key member of Diego Simeone’s squad.

For Arsenal, the situation is one worth monitoring as the 1 September transfer deadline approaches.

The Gunners have already strengthened their squad this summer but could still consider another attacking addition if a major opportunity emerges.

Alvarez’s preference for Barcelona remains a significant obstacle, but Arsenal’s interest could become more relevant if Atletico eventually soften their position.
