2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Poland denies Falconets captain visa

Nigeria’s Falconets could be forced to begin the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup without captain Joy Igbokwe after the midfielder encountered visa difficulties.

Igbokwe, who plays for Nasarawa Amazons, was expected to lead Nigeria at the tournament in Poland following her influential role during the team’s qualification campaign.

According to Blueprint, the development has created uncertainty around the captain’s availability as the tournament draws closer.

Igbokwe’s World Cup participation in doubt

Details of the visa setback remain unclear, with neither the Nigeria Football Federation nor the player publicly confirming a visa rejection.

It is also unknown whether the problem is connected to documentation, processing delays or another administrative issue.

Igbokwe’s possible absence could affect the Falconets significantly, particularly because of her leadership and familiarity with the team.

She captained Nigeria during key matches in the qualifying series and contributed to the team’s successful campaign.

The midfielder had also spoken confidently about the squad’s determination to perform well and make the country proud.

Several players reportedly face visa challenges

The visa concerns are reportedly not limited to Igbokwe.

A number of other Falconets players are also understood to have encountered difficulties obtaining the necessary travel clearance.

However, their names and the nature of their individual challenges have not been officially revealed.

The situation could leave coach Moses Aduku and his technical team facing late changes to the squad.

Should Igbokwe fail to secure her visa in time, another player could be drafted into the squad.

Nigeria prepare for World Cup challenge

The Falconets have continued their preparations despite the off-field uncertainty.

Aduku has emphasised the importance of fitness, confidence and developing a winning mentality before the competition.

Nigeria recorded a 10-0 victory over Abuja-based Sunshine FC during a preparatory match in July.

The coach, however, admitted that his side still had work to do before facing the best teams at the global tournament.

Nigeria earned its World Cup ticket after defeating Rwanda, Senegal and Malawi in the African qualifiers.

The qualification also maintained the country’s unique record of appearing at every edition of the U-20 Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 2002.

Falconets face Spain in opening match

Nigeria will compete in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and Paraguay.

The Falconets are scheduled to face Spain in their opening fixture on September 7.

They will meet China PR three days later before taking on Paraguay on September 13.

The tournament will be staged across Poland from September 5 to 27.

Nigeria have previously reached the final twice, finishing runners-up in 2010 and 2014.

The Falconets also secured a semi-final finish in 2012.

Visa situation remains unresolved

For now, uncertainty continues over whether Igbokwe will be able to join her teammates in Poland.

There is no official confirmation that her visa application has been rejected.

The situation could still change if the outstanding issues are resolved before Nigeria’s final travel arrangements.
