Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has revealed that he travelled to Italy for a spiritual pilgrimage where he prayed for Nigeria and against insecurity, terrorism and banditry.
Akpabio made the disclosure during a visit to the Prayer Ground of St Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy, where he said he sought divine intervention for the country and its leaders.

Akpabio explains reason for Rome trip
Explaining his visit, Akpabio said he travelled to Rome because of its significance to the Catholic faith and visited the St Padre Pio site to offer prayers.
The Senate President said, “I prayed for Nigeria as a whole and I also prayed against insecurity that God should free us from insecurity. I prayed against banditry. I prayed against terrorism.”
He said his prayers covered President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the National Assembly, the Federal Executive Council and Nigeria generally.
Akpabio described the trip as a “slight pilgrimage” and said his decision was rooted in his Christian belief that divine protection was necessary alongside efforts to secure the country.
Senate President also prays for 2027 elections
During the visit, Akpabio also prayed for peaceful conduct of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, alongside his prayers for an end to banditry and terrorism.
The visit comes as insecurity remains a major issue in Nigeria, with reports of attacks, kidnappings, terrorism and banditry continuing to generate concern.
Akpabio said the delegation returned from the prayer ground after seeking blessings for themselves, their families and Nigeria.
