“I can’t date a girl who has dated a yahoo boy” — Man says

A man has generated widespread reactions on social media after stating that he would never date a woman who previously had a relationship with a suspected internet fraudster, popularly known in Nigeria as a “Yahoo boy.”
The man shared his opinion during an online discussion about dating standards, trust and financial influence in relationships.
His comments quickly went viral, attracting mixed reactions from users across different platforms. While some people supported his viewpoint, others criticised him for stereotyping women based on their past relationships.
“I can never date a girl who has dated a yahoo boy before. Many girls who have dated a yahoo boy before have no character or dignity. That kind of girl is lured by money only, she likes money and I can’t trust that kind of girl,” he added.
Debate revives concerns over online fraud culture
The statement has since reignited conversations about the influence of internet fraud culture on relationships and social values among young Nigerians.
Over the years, the lavish lifestyle associated with suspected fraudsters has remained a major topic online, with critics arguing that social media has glamorised quick wealth and materialism.
In 2024, several relationship discussions also trended after users debated whether financial status now plays a bigger role than character in modern dating.
While supporters of the man argued that relationships built around money rarely last, others insisted that individuals should not be judged solely by who they dated in the past, stressing that personal growth and change remain possible.
