Eric Chelle praises players mentality after Madagascar’s win
Super Eagles coach Éric Chelle has praised his players’ mentality after Nigeria began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar.
Nigeria fell behind after Ehsan Kari opened the scoring 16 minutes into the encounter, leaving the three-time African champions with an early setback at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The Super Eagles responded before half-time, with George Ilenikhena marking his international debut by bringing Nigeria level.
Moses Usor then completed the comeback shortly after coming off the bench, scoring four minutes after replacing Samuel Chukwueze in the 61st minute.
Chelle praises players’ mentality
Although Nigeria created enough opportunities to score more goals, their finishing prevented them from putting the game beyond Madagascar.
Chelle admitted the performance was far from perfect but was pleased with the response after conceding first.
“This game was not bad, but not good either. We made the first mistake, and that was why we conceded,” Chelle said.
“After that, we had a lot of chances to score, but because technically we were not very sharp, we could not convert them.”
The French tactician, however, highlighted the players’ commitment to the national team.
“At the end of the day, though, the mindset was right. They gave everything for the shirt, for the country.”
Chelle welcomes Osimhen’s support
Chelle also singled out Victor Osimhen’s presence around the squad despite the striker being unavailable for selection.
The Galatasaray forward was spotted with his teammates after the match after travelling to Uyo to support the Super Eagles.
“I was also very happy that Victor (Osimhen) was here. It shows that this group is trying to move forward and build something new,” Chelle added.
“I am very proud of the team’s spirit.”
The victory leaves Nigeria level on points with Guinea-Bissau, who also won their opening Group L fixture against Tanzania.
With Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON as co-hosts, only one of Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar can claim the group’s remaining qualification spot.
The Super Eagles will face Guinea-Bissau in their next fixture, with Chelle’s side seeking another victory to strengthen their position in the group.
