Ilenikhena vows to “keep working” after scoring on Super Eagles debut
George Ilenikhena has expressed his delight after making a memorable Super Eagles debut in Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar.
The Al-Ittihad forward was handed a starting role by head coach Eric Chelle in Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Ilenikhena repaid that faith by getting on the scoresheet as the Super Eagles recovered from falling behind to secure all three points.
The 20-year-old later took to Instagram to celebrate his first appearance for the senior national team.
“Proud to have made my debut with the national team. We keep working,” Ilenikhena wrote.
Ilenikhena enjoying strong run of form
The forward has made a strong start to the 2026/27 season, with seven goals and two assists from 10 appearances for club and country.
His latest goal came at an important moment for Nigeria, helping the Super Eagles begin their qualification campaign with a victory and keep pace with Guinea-Bissau at the top of Group L.
Nigeria currently sit second in the group on goal difference after Guinea-Bissau opened their campaign with a 2-0 away victory over Tanzania.
The Super Eagles will face Guinea-Bissau in their next fixture on Tuesday, September 29, with the match taking place in Bissau.
Super Eagles face crucial Guinea-Bissau clash
The meeting carries added importance because Tanzania are already assured of a place at the 2027 AFCON as one of the tournament’s co-hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda.
As a result, only one of Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar can qualify from Group L through the qualification process.
Nigeria will therefore be looking to build on their comeback against Madagascar by securing another positive result against Guinea-Bissau.
