Barcelona send delegates to London as pursuit for Chelsea forward Joao Pedro intensifies

Barcelona have stepped up their search for a new striker after sporting director Deco travelled to London for talks involving Joao Pedro and Chelsea.

The Brazilian forward has reportedly emerged as Barcelona’s leading target for the number nine position as the club plans for life after Robert Lewandowski.

Reports in Spain claim Deco met with Pedro’s representatives while also seeking clarity from Chelsea regarding the club’s stance on a possible transfer this summer.

Chelsea yet to lower demands

Barcelona are understood to believe a deal could be completed for around €70 million, although Chelsea are reportedly expected to demand a higher fee for the 24-year-old attacker.

Pedro remains focused on Chelsea’s push for Champions League qualification, with the London side still battling for a top-four finish heading into the final matches of the season.

Deco’s visit also coincided with Chelsea’s preparations for the FA Cup final against Manchester City, a match Pedro’s agent is expected to attend.

Barcelona had previously explored a move for Julián Álvarez of Atlético Madrid, but the Spanish champions now reportedly view that deal as difficult to complete.

Pedro seen as long-term option

The Catalan club believe Pedro’s profile makes him a suitable long-term replacement in attack because of his versatility and technical style.

Compared to other names linked with Barcelona, including Lautaro Martínez of Inter Milan, Pedro is considered the youngest option with the most room for development.

However, he also arrives with less experience at the highest level compared to Martínez and Álvarez.

Barcelona’s recruitment team reportedly see similarities between Pedro’s playing style and Lewandowski’s overall movement and attacking characteristics, making him an attractive option as the club reshapes its frontline for next season.
