Chelsea move closer to appointing Xabi Alonso

Chelsea are reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Xabi Alonso over becoming the club’s new head coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager has emerged as Chelsea’s leading candidate following talks with several coaches during the club’s search for a permanent replacement.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea recently held direct talks with Alonso and expect a final decision soon as negotiations accelerate.
The club want to confirm their new manager shortly after Saturday’s FA Cup final, where interim coach Calum McFarlane will remain in charge.
Chelsea looking to move quickly
Chelsea’s hierarchy are pushing to finalise the appointment quickly amid concerns that rival clubs could also enter the race for Alonso.

Liverpool supporters have increasingly questioned manager Arne Slot following a disappointing end to the season, including a 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa.
That loss marked Liverpool’s 20th defeat in all competitions this season and intensified speculation surrounding Alonso, who remains highly respected at Anfield following his playing career there.
However, Liverpool are not currently expected to part ways with Slot after only one full season in charge, leaving Chelsea in a stronger position to complete a deal.
Alonso set for greater influence
Chelsea reportedly view Alonso as the standout option because of his tactical profile and experience developing young squads.
The club are also prepared to give the Spaniard greater influence over transfers compared to previous managers under the BlueCo ownership structure.
Reports suggest Chelsea plan to recruit several experienced players this summer to strengthen the first team immediately.
Alonso enjoyed major success during his spell at Bayer Leverkusen, winning the Bundesliga, German Cup and German Super Cup before leaving the German side.
The 44-year-old later took charge at Real Madrid but departed earlier this season following reported disagreements within the dressing room.
