2027: Nobody can match my plans for the North — Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed optimism about gaining strong backing from northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections, stating that his vision for the region stands out from that of other contenders.

Speaking on Prime Time on Arise Television, Obi said he plans to drive significant transformation in the North, which he described as a key national asset with vast potential, particularly in agriculture.

He noted that the region could generate greater economic returns through farming than the country currently earns from oil.

“Nobody can do what I intend to do in the North. We will change the North. Our greatest asset as a country is in the North. We can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor also stressed the need to strengthen democratic institutions, urging the government to create space for a vibrant opposition.

He maintained that a functional opposition is crucial for ensuring accountability and improving governance.

“The government should protect the opposition. In fact, they should make opposition stronger and make it work,” Peter Obi added.

“I’ve said it before. Do not vote for me because I’m from the South East or Christian. Vote for me because I’m committed to turning around Nigeria and I’ll start from the North, because I know where the problem is. I’ll move the country from consumption to production. From sharing the wealth to creating the wealth. When you start creating the wealth, people will see it. You build a society where people’s talent and hardwork will match up the opportunities. Where a child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody.

That’s how it is in England. Nobody knew your father when they gave you a job…”
