2027: “When I become President, I’ll celebrate Sallah in Sokoto or Kano” – Peter Obi takes swipe at Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has revealed where he would prefer to celebrate the Muslim festival of Sallah if elected President of Nigeria.

Obi noted that President Bola Tinubu, who is a Muslim, typically spends his Sallah celebrations in Lagos State. However, he disclosed that he would choose to mark the occasion in Sokoto or Kano State if given the opportunity to lead the country.

Speaking on his preference, Obi explained that he would want to celebrate Sallah alongside the Sultan of Sokoto, while Kano would serve as an alternative.

“President Tinubu, who is a Muslim, spends his Sallah in Lagos State. If I’m President, I’ll spend my Sallah in Sokoto State with the Sultan or in Kano State,” he stated.

The former Anambra State governor’s comment highlights his preference for participating in major cultural and religious celebrations in different parts of the country.

By choosing Sokoto or Kano, Obi indicated that he would use such occasions to connect with communities outside the nation’s political centre and participate in important celebrations alongside traditional and religious leaders.

Sallah is one of the major Islamic celebrations observed by Muslims across Nigeria, often bringing families, religious leaders, traditional rulers and political figures together.

Obi’s remarks have also renewed discussions about how Nigerian presidents participate in religious and cultural events across the country while representing the nation’s diverse population.
