“Peter Obi is just another Buhari” — Sola Kuti reveals Nigeria’s real problem

Media personality Sola Kuti has argued that Nigeria’s political and economic challenges are rooted in the country’s governing structure rather than the individuals elected into office.
Speaking during a conversation on national politics, Kuti cautioned Nigerians against believing that a change in leadership alone can automatically transform the country.
He suggested that the high expectations currently placed on Peter Obi mirror the optimism many Nigerians once had before former President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office.
According to Kuti, Buhari was widely celebrated by supporters before becoming president, with many convinced that his administration would tackle corruption and address longstanding governance issues.
However, he noted that the outcome of Buhari’s presidency did not match the expectations many Nigerians had at the time.
During the discussion, Kuti drew a direct comparison between the two politicians, stating, “Peter Obi, for me, is just another Buhari.”
Leadership alone cannot fix a broken structure
Expanding on his argument, Kuti said the real obstacle to national development is the system itself, which he described as deeply flawed.
He maintained that even leaders who enter office with good intentions often find themselves constrained by entrenched interests and institutional limitations.
“The point that I’m trying to make… is that the system, if the system is broken, there’s nothing you can do when you get there,” he said.
Kuti argued that Nigerians frequently focus on individual politicians while overlooking the structural problems that continue to affect governance and public administration.
Buhari used as example
Referencing Buhari’s time in office, Kuti said the former president’s experience demonstrates how difficult it can be for any leader to achieve meaningful change within an ineffective political framework.
Despite his personal reservations about Buhari, Kuti said he was struck by the former president’s inability to deliver the reforms many expected.
“No matter how much I didn’t like Buhari… I realized that a soul like him with such principles, in quotes, could go into government and achieve absolutely nothing,” he stated.
For Kuti, the lesson from Buhari’s presidency is that Nigeria’s future depends less on who occupies the highest office and more on whether the institutions and structures of governance are reformed.
