“On top my money?” – Lady recounts harassment by tout after refusing to give him ₦200 at Apapa Market

A Nigerian lady has recounted how she was allegedly harassed by a tout at Apata Market, Ibadan, after she refused to give him ₦200.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she explained that she often encounters people begging for money around the market and sometimes gives them cash. She recalled giving another man ₦1,000 earlier that day after he approached her and begged for money.

In her words, she said:

“When I was going to the market today, one came, he prostrated and was like, ‘Mama, give us something, please.’ I had to just give him ₦1,000. On my way back, another came, he was running after me.

He said, ‘Ah, Mama, give us something now.’ He was not even speaking English. I just heard, ‘Mama, ẹ fún wa ní kan náà’ (Mama, give us something). I didn’t pay attention. I didn’t look back.”

According to her, she ignored the second man until he became angry because she refused to give him money, questioning why she could not give him ₦200.

She further expressed anger over the alleged incident, saying she could not understand why she was being insulted simply because she declined to give him money.

“The next thing I heard was, ‘Ah, is this one mad? How much is ₦200 that she can’t give us?’ I was like, ‘On top my money?’ What the actual fuck was that? He was like, ‘O’hun na ni idi yin she gbe yen’ (That is why your backside is flat),” she added.

The lady’s account has generated reactions online, with some social media users discussing aggressive begging, entitlement and the harassment people face when they refuse to give money.
