Netherlands to shut embassies in 3 African countries, releases list
The Netherlands has confirmed plans to close its diplomatic missions in five countries, with Zimbabwe becoming the latest addition to the list.
The Dutch government announced that the embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe, will close alongside four previously announced diplomatic missions.

The affected countries are:
- Zimbabwe – Embassy in Harare
- Libya – Embassy in Tripoli
- Burundi – Embassy in Bujumbura
- Myanmar – Embassy in Yangon
- Brazil – Consulate-General in Rio de Janeiro
According to the Dutch government, the decision forms part of changes to its worldwide diplomatic network as it adjusts how and where Dutch interests are represented.
After the closures, Dutch interests in the affected countries will be handled by embassies in neighbouring countries. The government did not provide specific closure dates in its latest announcement.
The Netherlands currently operates 113 embassies and 27 consulates-general around the world. At the same time, the government is allocating €35 million to strengthen its diplomatic network, including plans to open new embassies and invest in existing missions.
The latest changes will therefore see the Netherlands reduce its diplomatic presence in parts of Africa, Asia and South America, while strengthening its presence in selected locations based on its political and economic interests.
