Man laments after FMC Abeokuta gives him October appointment for son’s ear check

A Nigerian man has expressed frustration after taking his son to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Ogun State, only to be given an appointment date in October for an ear examination.

The man shared his experience in a video that has gone viral on social media, showing a hospital appointment card indicating October 2, 2026.

According to him, he visited the medical centre on September 10 to have his son’s ears checked but was asked to return several weeks later.

Man questions Nigeria’s healthcare system

Showing the appointment card in the video, the man said:

“Imagine you come to Federal Medical Centre here in Abeokuta to treat your child for whatever thing it is. I brought my son here to check his ears and they are saying we should come back in October. This is the card.

Let me show you. Let’s see. 2nd of October, 2026. Today is 10th of September. They say we should come back October. I think our federal government needs to do something better to their medical services.

Nigeria is getting bad daily.”

The video has since generated debate among social media users, with some questioning the waiting period while others argued that long hospital waiting lists are also common in developed countries.

Nigerians react

Knightzine argued that the waiting period could be linked to the hospital’s assessment of the case.

“You have about one month appointment and you are not happy. Go to saner climes, UK, US and see how many months you will have to wait if is not an emergency. There is something called Triage. They have evaluated your child’s case and it is not an emergency case.”

Aolamilekan, however, shared a personal experience involving his mother.

“Same happened to my Mum. 2yrs ago. She went to FMC after some test and seeing the doc. She was giving an appointment of months time. And given pain relief drugs, she was serious feeling pains, we went there to complain, we are told to come on the appointment day. She later died.”

Prince expressed concern about the state of healthcare in Nigeria.

“Nigeria is not just getting bad; it’s worse than anything you could ever imagine. Nobody values human life. Everyone living there is like someone on death row.”

Empire linked the issue to governance and political promises.

“😆 🤣 😂 they wll promises before election,and will still come back with same strategies,see the results now…..and you want me to vote same person again….not me….health shld not be ignored in good governance.”

Obadaih noted that patients could also face lengthy waiting periods in Western countries.

“You could also be on the wait list for months in the west as well (Now, this is not me trying to defend the zoological republic. God knows I hate that country). If you want to be attended to immediately, travel to China.”
