Lookman scores as Atletico Madrid secure win over Sevilla

Ademola Lookman was on target as Atletico Madrid claimed a 3-1 victory over Sevilla in LaLiga on Saturday.

Diego Simeone’s side made an explosive start, scoring twice inside the opening 26 minutes before Alex Baena added another to give Atletico a comfortable lead at half-time.

Lookman doubles Atletico’s advantage

Atletico opened the scoring after just four minutes when Baena converted Kang-In Lee’s assist to put the visitors in front.

Lookman then increased the advantage in the 26th minute. The Nigeria international found space inside the penalty area and calmly guided Pablo Barrios’ pass into the bottom-left corner.

The forward continued to pose problems for the Sevilla defence, having earlier seen an effort from outside the box blocked.

Baena completed his brace seven minutes later, producing an excellent finish from the edge of the area as Atletico took a 3-0 lead into the break.

Sevilla pull one back

Sevilla returned from the interval with greater poise and eventually reduced the deficit in the 66th minute.

Miguel Sierra reacted quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area and converted to give the hosts hope of mounting a comeback.

Lookman briefly appeared to have restored Atletico’s three-goal advantage after the restart, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

The Nigerian also saw another attempt from the edge of the box blocked before being substituted shortly after Sevilla’s goal, with Arnau Ortiz replacing him.

Atletico hold on for victory

Sevilla pushed for a second goal but struggled to break through an Atletico defence that became increasingly organised as the match progressed.

Simeone’s team managed the closing stages effectively to secure all three points and a convincing away victory.
