A lady has stirred reactions on social media after commenting on public marriage proposals, stating that many people adopt foreign traditions without fully understanding the customs behind them.

In a viral video, she claimed that ladies who insist their boyfriends must go down on one knee to propose should also be prepared to embrace what she described as the accompanying cultural responsibility.

Lady Questions Popular Proposal Trend

According to her, many women dream of a grand public proposal, where a man kneels to ask for their hand in marriage while people around cheer and record the moment on their phones.

She, however, argued that the tradition is rooted in Western culture, where, the bride’s father is reportedly expected to pay for the wedding.

“Consider the Tradition Fully” – Lady Advises

The lady urged women to ensure their fathers were financially prepared before expecting such proposals, insisting that people should not adopt only the parts of another culture they find appealing.

She maintained that if someone chooses to imitate a foreign tradition, they should be willing to embrace every aspect of it rather than selecting only what suits them.

In her words:

“As you talk say your boyfriend must go down on his knees and ask you, ‘Babe, will you marry me?’ in public so that everybody go dey move camera and everybody go dey say, ‘Aww… please say yes.’

“Shey you know say when he goes down on his knees to propose to you, your father is the one that is going to pay for the wedding?

“According to American culture, the father of the bride pays for the wedding. The boy goes down on his knees and asks the girl to marry him, but the father has to pay for the wedding.

“Before you fantasise all that thing, be sure your father get enough money to pay for your wedding. If you wan copy someone’s culture, copy everything, no choose only one part.

“If your father gets money, okay. But make your papa know so that him go prepare himself because na him go pay for almost everything, including the hall and aso ebi.”
