“I need you to pretend we’re friends.” — Lady shares how lie unexpectedly turned into weekly bible study

A lady has gone viral after sharing how a late-night request from her neighbour turned into an unexpected commitment that neither of them saw coming.
According to the woman, her neighbour knocked on her door at about 11 p.m. carrying a casserole and asked for a favour.
She said the neighbour admitted she had told her visiting in-laws that she had a “close friend next door” because they believed she was too isolated and insisted on meeting the supposed friend.
The lady revealed that she was still in her pyjamas when the request came but agreed after her neighbour offered her $40 to help maintain the story. She then spent several hours with the family, inventing details about their imaginary friendship.
A harmless lie takes an unexpected turn
The lady said she claimed they had a book club together when questioned by the neighbour’s in-laws. However, when they asked what book they were reading, she panicked.
The woman said, “the Bible.”
According to her, the answer delighted her neighbour’s mother-in-law, who announced that she would join their Bible study during her monthly visits, turning the fabricated story into a real commitment.
Later, the lady added, “We tried to read Genesis last night and got into a 45-minute argument about whether Noah’s ark had dinosaurs.”
Story amuses social media users
The humorous account has attracted widespread reactions online, with many users laughing at how a simple favour evolved into a regular Bible study.
Others said the story illustrated how small lies can quickly grow into long-term commitments that are difficult to escape.
