“I feel irritated by Peter Obi’s interview with Seun on Channels TV” — Aisha Yesufu
Political activist Aisha Yesufu has reacted to the recent interview granted by Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi on Channels Television, describing the discussion as repetitive and saying Nigerians should shift their attention to the country’s pressing political issues.
In a video shared on social media, Yesufu said she was left disappointed after watching Obi’s interview with Channels Television’s Seun Okinbaloye, arguing that the conversation covered questions that had already been asked and answered several times.
Says interview offered nothing new
Expressing her frustration, Yesufu said she no longer found excitement in Obi’s media appearances because the discussions had become repetitive.
“I just feel irritated by the whole thing. I really am absolutely feeling irritated.”
She added that after reviewing the interview, she could not find any fresh question or new issue worth discussing.
“It’s the same conversation again and again. I don’t think there’s any question that Seun asked Peter Obi that has not already been asked.”
According to her, the repeated focus on Obi was unnecessary, especially when other presidential candidates were not facing similar public scrutiny.
Questions unequal treatment of candidates
Yesufu argued that Obi continued to receive the toughest questions while other candidates were rarely subjected to comparable interviews.
“More pressure is being put on Peter Obi… The other candidates, nothing is being said about them. They are not coming out to do the interview.”
She also criticised President Bola Tinubu, alleging that he was not being questioned in the same way.
“Nobody is asking him tough questions. He’s not in front of the camera.”
Defends Obi over commissioner comments
Reacting to criticism from APC supporters, including presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, over Obi’s comments about Muslim commissioners during his tenure as Anambra governor, Yesufu said his remarks had been misunderstood.
She explained that Obi was referring to Commissioners of Police, not members of his state executive council.
“He was referring to his police commissioners.”
According to her, Obi had repeatedly stated that many of the Commissioners of Police who served during his administration were Muslims from Northern Nigeria, which she said contradicted allegations that he discriminated against Northerners.
Urges Nigerians to focus on elections
Yesufu said Nigerians already knew enough about Obi and should instead focus on electing competent leaders and holding them accountable after they assume office.
“I don’t think there’s anything about Peter Obi that you need to know that you’ve not heard already.”
She argued that the country’s worsening condition deserved greater attention than repeated interviews.
“Can we focus on the main issue of ensuring that we get this person into office and then we hold him accountable?”
Says Nigerians must take responsibility
Recalling a conversation with a Nigerian in Milton Keynes who questioned Obi’s sincerity, Yesufu said voters should choose the best available candidate and assess performance after the election.
“When he gets in there, we’ll find out how genuine he is. If all of these things are a lie… take him out again.”
She accused Nigerians of often sabotaging opportunities for change by overthinking their choices.
“We’re so good at self-sabotaging.”
According to Yesufu, countries with better living standards succeeded because their citizens ensured capable leaders emerged through the electoral process.
“The only thing that they did was to ensure that they get good people into government.”
Final message
Concluding her remarks, Yesufu reiterated that she found the interview frustrating because it revisited issues that had already been extensively discussed instead of focusing on Nigeria’s broader challenges.
“For me, honestly, the whole interview… it’s just been a bit of irritation. Same thing over and over again.”
She urged Nigerians to take the election seriously, warning that failure to do so would only prolong the country’s current challenges.
