Hedy Lamarr Early Life

Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler popularly known as Hedy Lamarr was born in Vienna in 1914, the only child of Gertrud Trude Kiesler and Emil Kiesler.

Emil, her father, was born to a Galician-Jewish family in Lemberg, Austria, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Lviv, Ukraine), and was a deputy director of Wiener Bankverein in the 1920s and a director of the combined Creditanstalt-Bankverein at the end of his life.

Trude’s mother, a musician from Budapest, came from an upper-class Hungarian-Jewish family. She had converted to Catholicism and was described as a “practising Christian” who nurtured her daughter as a Christian, even though Hedy had not yet been properly christened.

Lamarr developed an interest in acting as a child and was captivated by theatre and film. She won a beauty pageant in Vienna when she was 12 years old.

She also started to associate creation with her father, who would take her for walks and explain how the technology worked.

During the height of Hedy Lamarr popularity in 1942, Lamarr received acclaim in a sector unrelated to entertainment.

She and her companion, composer George Antheil, were granted a patent for an invention for a radio signalling mechanism, or “Secret Communications System,” which allowed them to change radio frequencies to prevent opponents from reading messages.

Originally intended to defeat the German Nazis, the system became a significant step forward in the development of technology to ensure the security of both military communications and cellular phones.

Hedy Lamarr’s communications breakthrough was not immediately recognized since its wide-ranging significance was not realized until decades later.

Lamarr has six marriages. During her second marriage to Gene Markey, she adopted a son, James, in 1939. Denise (b. 1945) and Anthony (b. 1947) were her biological children with her third husband, actor John Loder, who also adopted James.

Lamarr completed the naturalization procedure and became a U.S. citizen in 1953.
