Frank Onyeka faces late fitness test for Coventry’s Aston Villa Carabao Cup clash
Coventry City will assess Frank Onyeka ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third-round meeting with Aston Villa as the midfielder races to recover from injury.
The Nigeria international was forced off during Coventry’s heavy 5-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at home on Sunday.

Onyeka was replaced by Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi with 18 minutes remaining as Coventry endured another difficult afternoon in the Premier League.
Awoniyi unavailable after Brighton red card
Coventry will already be without another Nigerian international for the cup encounter, with Taiwo Awoniyi suspended following his dismissal against Brighton.
Awoniyi received a straight red card in the 53rd minute of Sunday’s defeat, leaving manager Frank Lampard with another selection problem ahead of the visit of Aston Villa.
Josh Eccles, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Luke Woolfenden and Haji Wright are also expected to miss the third-round tie.
Onyeka’s availability will therefore be particularly important for Frank Lampard, who could be forced to make further adjustments to his midfield depending on the outcome of the midfielder’s fitness assessment.
Coventry searching for a response
The Sky Blues head into the Villa clash in poor form, having managed just one victory in their opening five matches across all competitions this season.
Their latest defeat was particularly damaging, with Brighton scoring five times without reply and leaving Coventry still searching for consistency.
