Ex-porn star sworn in as senator in Colombia
Former adult film actress Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, widely known by her stage name Amaranta Hank, has officially been sworn in as a senator in Colombia after winning a seat in the country’s March parliamentary election.
Her inauguration marks a remarkable transition from the adult entertainment industry to national politics, making her one of the most talked-about figures in Colombia’s new Senate.
Omaña campaigned on a platform focused on securing legal protections, labour rights and greater recognition for people working in the adult entertainment industry.
Represents Norte de Santander in new Senate
According to Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, Omaña will represent the Norte de Santander region in the Senate as a member of the left-wing Historic Pact coalition during the 2026–2030 legislative term.
She secured her place in Congress after finishing 23rd on the coalition’s closed electoral list. The Historic Pact emerged as the country’s strongest political alliance in the election, winning 22.72 per cent of the Senate vote.
Official figures from Colombia’s National Registry showed the coalition received more than 4.4 million votes, earning 25 seats in the Senate and reinforcing its position as the dominant political force.
Defends past career amid criticism
Before entering politics, Omaña worked as a journalist before moving into the adult film industry, where she gained widespread recognition under the name Amaranta Hank.
She has consistently maintained that her previous career should not define her ability to serve in public office.
She has argued that people who have worked in the sexual economy deserve equal opportunities and legal recognition instead of discrimination and social stigma.
According to Infobae Colombia, the senator believes adult entertainment workers make meaningful contributions to Colombia’s economy and should enjoy the same legal protections and dignity as workers in other sectors.
Responds to critics over Senate seat
Following criticism over her election, Omaña defended her candidacy in a TikTok video, questioning why her previous profession should prevent her from holding public office.
She asked in Spanish: “¿Por qué una mujer que estuvo en la industria para adultos no puede aspirar a un cargo de elección popular?”
Translated into English, the statement means: “Why can’t a woman who worked in the adult industry aspire to a popularly elected office?”
Her response attracted widespread debate on social media, with supporters praising her stance against discrimination while critics continued to question her suitability for public office.
Plans to focus on mental health and abuse prevention
Born in the city of Cúcuta, Omaña said her legislative priorities extend beyond issues affecting adult entertainment workers.
She has pledged to promote policies aimed at improving mental health services, preventing sexual abuse and strengthening protections for vulnerable groups across Colombia.
Her election follows months of public attention after she and former adult performer Juan Carlos Florián were appointed to senior positions within Colombia’s Ministry of Equality under President Gustavo Petro’s administration.
