“Eleven years after graduation, most of my classmates still can’t afford marriage” — Man laments Nigeria hardship

A man has expressed frustration over worsening economic conditions, revealing how financial struggles have delayed marriage and family life for many graduates from his 2015 university set.
The man, who spoke on social media, highlighted the impact of rising living costs and limited savings on young Nigerians more than a decade after graduation.
He noted that despite completing university the same year former President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office, many of his peers are yet to achieve basic life milestones, particularly marriage and financial stability.
Struggles with finances and delayed family life
“I graduated from the university in 2015. That was the same year Buhari got in. This year makes it 11 years after uni. I can tell you for a fact that of about 50 guys in my class, we are not up to 10 that are married and have started a family. I am among the lucky few that could make some money to start a family within 5 years after graduation.”
Rising cost of living fuels frustration
“Many of the guys in my set till today still look up to me as someone who did what they still are trying to do. While some say they haven’t seen the woman, others say it’s majorly because of finances. One cannot save meaningfully because all income goes to eating. The prices of everything has gone up. Just one day, fear of the bullet and prison walls will not be able to stop what’s coming.”
His concerns echo similar warnings raised in 2023 when economists flagged Nigeria’s inflation surge and declining purchasing power, which continue to affect young professionals nationwide.
