“He doesn’t worth it” — Lady recounts colleague’s remark after office planned gift for security guard

A lady has generated conversations online after recounting how a colleague allegedly opposed an office plan to financially support a security guard whose wife had just welcomed a baby.

According to her, the security guard was absent from work because his wife had put to bed. She explained that it was a long-standing tradition in the office for staff members to contribute ₦20,000 each whenever a colleague celebrated a major life event such as a wedding or child dedication.

Colleague allegedly opposed office contribution

The lady said the Human Resources department suggested making the contribution immediately so the security guard could receive the money when he needed it most, with deductions to be made from staff salaries at the end of the month.

She added that the 11-member team planned to raise ₦220,000, with ₦20,000 set aside for diapers and the remaining ₦200,000 to be transferred directly to the security guard.

The lady said a colleague in the Accounting department objected, saying, “Why should we contribute ₦20,000 for a common gateman? He doesn’t even earn up to that amount as salary. She has a lot of expenses this month. Let’s just do ₦5,000 each.”

Story sparks debate on kindness

The woman further claimed that the same colleague had previously received financial support from the office after undergoing an appendix operation, with no one complaining about contributing at the time.

Her account has since sparked mixed reactions online, with many social media users criticising the alleged remark and stressing the importance of showing compassion regardless of a person’s job title.

Others argued that workplace support should be extended equally to every member of staff during significant life events.
