“I expected the worst from Nigerian women” — South African woman reveals what happened after marriage to Nigerian family

A South African woman has gone viral after opening up about how her first visit to Nigeria completely changed her long-held perception of Nigerian women and family life.

The woman revealed that before marrying a Nigerian man, she had often heard stereotypes portraying Nigerian women as controlling, impatient, loud and primarily interested in money. However, she said her personal experience proved otherwise after she travelled to Nigeria to meet her husband’s family for the first time.

Visit to Nigeria changed her perspective

The woman said, “I had always heard stereotypes that Nigerian women are controlling, impatient, loud, and only care about money. To make things more interesting, I married a Nigerian man.”

She explained that her fears quickly disappeared upon meeting her mother-in-law, who welcomed her warmly and treated her with exceptional kindness throughout her stay.

The woman added, “When I visited Nigeria to meet my in-laws for the first time as a South African, my experience was completely different. My mother-in-law treated me like a princess. She wouldn’t let me serve myself, wash dishes, or lift a finger.”

Story sparks reactions online

Reflecting on the cultural differences, she noted that the treatment she received contrasted sharply with expectations in her home country.

She further stated, “In my culture in South Africa, a new wife is often expected be a slave in the house, but that wasn’t my experience with my Nigerian mother-in-law.”

Her account has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians praising the hospitality she described, while others shared similar experiences of being warmly received by their in-laws, saying her story challenges common stereotypes about Nigerian families.
