Ivorian player and former Chelsea forward, Didier Drogba has taken to Twitter to share an emotional story of how teammate, Juan Mata, helped him win the Champions League when the match was just 8 minutes remaining.
Drogba reminisced on a moment in 2012 when his club’s manager had just been sacked and things were disorganized at Stamford Bridge.
According to him, he had stayed at Chelsea for 8 years without winning the Champions League title.
He revealed that his teammates decided to give their all after ending up at the “runner up” each year.
Worried, Drogba said he discussed with his teammate Juan Mata saying, “please maestro, help me win the champions league.”
He said Mata looked at him and told him, “Man, you’re crazy. You’re Didier Drogba and you’re gonna help me win it.”
Drogba replied to him: “I’ve been here for eight years and never won it, so I believe you’re the one who’s gonna help us win.”
Three months later, they were at Munich for the Champions League final and Drogba said he had lost hope as the host club was leading with only 8 minutes to the end of the game.
Drogba said Mata approached and encouraged him. “Believe Didi. You have to believe” he told him.
But Drogba responded with teary eyes, “Believe in what? It’s almost over.”
However, at the last minute, Juan Mata took the corner kick which led the team to victory.
Little wonder they both remained close pals even when Mata moved to Manchester United.
Drogba said the lesson in his story is “always believe.”
