Boniface returns as Leverkusen cruise to DFB Pokal final

Bayer Leverkusen booked their place in the 2023/24 DFB Pokal final with a 4-0 win against Fortuna Dusseldorf, marked by the return of Victor Boniface.

Jeremie Frimpong opened scoring for Leverkusen just 11 minutes into the match, marking his 23rd goal contribution of the season.

Frimpong capitalizing on an unmarked opportunity to give his side the lead.

Amine Adli extended Leverkusen’s advantage nine minutes later, while Florian Wirtz utilized a defensive error to notch his first goal of the night.

After the break, Xabi Alonso’s men wasted no time adding to their tally, as Wirtz converted a penalty to secure his second goal of the match.

It marked his first career brace in his 141 games for the club.

The win ensures Leverkusen’s place in the DFB Pokal final, where they will face 1. FC Kaiserslautern in May.

Meanwhile, the game marked the return of Nigeria’s star forward Boniface, who has been sidelined for four months due to adductor muscle injury.

Boniface came in as a substitute in the 65th minute, replacing Patrik Schick.

His last game for the German giants was in a similar 4-0 win over Bochum in the Bundesliga on 12 December 2023.
