Rather than focusing solely on stopping the Argentina captain, Mohamed said Benin’s players want to savour the opportunity to share the pitch with the legendary forward.
‘We won’t be marking Messi’
Speaking to C5N ahead of the match, Mohamed explained Benin’s unusual approach to dealing with Messi.

“We won’t be marking Messi. We’ll just enjoy this match. I’ll watch him and say: Messi, you are a legend,” he said.
The Benin international went further by describing Messi as the best player in the world and revealing that he would even like Argentina to win the friendly.
Mohamed’s comments underline the unique circumstances surrounding the fixture, with Benin’s players set to face a player who has shaped an era of international football.
Messi is expected to receive a huge reception at the Monumental, where more than 85,000 supporters are set to witness the occasion.
Benin determined to enjoy historic occasion
Messi’s Argentina career includes 207 international appearances and 125 goals, as well as major honours including the 2022 World Cup.
For Benin, reaching Buenos Aires has been a difficult journey. The squad endured a 23-hour trip and reportedly found their accommodation below expectations during their preparations for the friendly.
Despite those challenges, Mohamed insists the players are focused on making the most of an occasion they are unlikely to forget.
“We will do our utmost to ensure this celebration is perfect,” he added.
