Arbeloa backs Bassey for leadership role at Fulham

Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa has backed Nigeria international Calvin Bassey to become a leader within his squad after praising the defender’s performance in their final pre-season fixture.

Bassey helped Fulham secure a 1-0 victory over Stuttgart at Craven Cottage on Saturday, producing a strong performance as the Premier League side kept a clean sheet.

The performance impressed Arbeloa, who believes the Nigerian’s physical and defensive qualities make him particularly suited to his tactical approach.

Arbeloa explains Bassey’s importance

Arbeloa wants his Fulham side to defend aggressively and maintain a high defensive line, a system that requires defenders who can cover significant space behind them.

The manager believes Bassey possesses the attributes needed to operate effectively in that setup.

“Calvin is a proper and top player for my style of game because we need to defend so high and leave a lot of space behind. He has everything,” Arbeloa told Fulham media.

Bassey’s pace, strength and ability to defend in open spaces have made him an important part of Fulham’s preparations ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

The Nigerian has also earned praise for his attitude away from the pitch, with Arbeloa highlighting his work ethic and personality.

Bassey tipped to lead Fulham

Arbeloa believes Bassey could take on greater responsibility within the dressing room as the season progresses.

“He is a funny guy but when we have to work he is always the first one. I love Calvin and he can be our leader,” the Fulham boss said.

Bassey joined Fulham in 2023 after leaving Dutch club Ajax and has since established himself as a regular presence in the Premier League.

The former Leicester City defender has made 101 appearances for Fulham across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing one assist.
