World Cup playoffs: Italy drop Chiesa over fitness concerns

Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have confirmed that Federico Chiesa has been omitted from the national squad due to fitness issues ahead of upcoming fixtures.

The winger has already left the training camp at Coverciano and returned to Liverpool after being assessed by medical staff.

FIGC confirms decision

In an official statement, the federation said: “Federico Chiesa, after his physical condition was assessed upon arrival at the federal technical centre, has been deemed unavailable for the next two matches and, in agreement with his club, has left the national team training camp.”

The decision follows consultation between Italy’s medical team and his club, ruling him out of the upcoming World Cup play-off matches.

Replacement named

Head coach Gennaro Gattuso has called up Nicolo Cambiaghi as a replacement.

Cambiaghi, who plays for Bologna, has impressed this season with consistent performances, contributing goals and assists across all competitions.

Chiesa, a key member of Italy’s Euro 2020-winning squad, has struggled for regular minutes this season, making limited appearances despite being part of Liverpool’s campaign.

His absence presents an opportunity for Cambiaghi to add to his international experience as Italy prepare for crucial matches, include one against Northern Ireland.
