Who was Alex Hughes?

Alex Hughes was born in Spain in 1987, while his father played for Barcelona. He is survived by his parents, Mark and Jill Hughes, and two siblings, Curtis and Xenna.

Alex Hughes had a tremendously diversified football career spanning nearly 20 years. While his father, Mark Hughes, was well-known on the field and on the sidelines, Alex was well regarded for his data analytics, global scouting infrastructure, and modern player recruitment techniques.

Alex Hughes hailed from a well-known sporting family, with his father being a legendary figure in both British and international football.

Growing up in a committed sporting environment, Alex and his brothers spent their childhood following their father’s career across Spain, Germany (when on loan at Bayern Munich), and various cities in England.

Career

Though he had a brief playing career in his youth with the reserve sides of Stockport County and Wrexham, he rapidly shifted behind the scenes into football analytics, scouting, and recruitment.

He began his career as a match performance analyst for Blackburn Rovers during the 2007/08 season. Later, he worked as a Manchester City development and recruitment analyst and Fulham’s head of analysis.

During these times, he collaborated closely with his father, who was administering the clubs.

He built his own profession by working as a FIFA-registered agent and managing a private football academy (VSI Rio Maior) in Portugal for three years. He also spent time working for the German team 1860 Munich.

In recent years, he has taken on executive recruitment positions for non-league and lower-league English clubs. He was the director of football for AFC Fylde and the head of scouting for Morecambe.

In July 2025, he began working as the Player Recruitment Lead for League Two club Grimsby Town. He was highly regarded by the club’s board and coaching staff for developing the team’s current transfer strategy.
