Ibrahim Idris Biography: Early Life, Career, Family, Death & Legacy

Ibrahim Idris (1949-September 20, 2026) was a Nigerian politician and businessman who was governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2008 and again from 2008 to 2012. He was a member of the People’s Democratic Party.

Idris was followed by his brother-in-law, Captain Idris Wada, who was elected in December 2011 and assumed office in January 2012.

Ibrahim Idris Biography

Ibrahim Idris was born in 1949 in Idah town, which is now part of the Idah Local Government Area in Kogi. He began his elementary schooling in 1954 at Onitsha, which is now in Anambra State.

He relocated to Kano in 1962 and completed his elementary school there in 1963. He relocated to Buguma, Rivers State, and enrolled in King’s Commercial College in 1964. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Abuja.

After finishing school, he founded the Ibro Trading Company, which has interests in building, furniture manufacturing, hotels, and other businesses.

In 1970, he relocated to Sokoto, where he established the Ibrahim Furniture Factory, the largest in the state, and then the Ibro Hotel, the first three-star hotel in the old Sokoto State.

Career

Idris, an Igala, emerged as the PDP governorship candidate for Kogi State in the 2003 Kogi State gubernatorial election after defeating an Ebira leader, Senator Ahmed Tijani Ahmed, in the federal primaries of Nigeria’s then ruling party.

He was elected governor of Kogi State on the PDP platform in April 2003, defeating then-governor Prince Abubakar Audu of the All People’s Party (APP). Ibrahim entered office on May 29, 2003.

Idris was re-elected in April 2007, but his victory was later declared null and void because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) incorrectly omitted All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate Abubakar Audu from the governorship election on April 14, 2007.

On February 6, 2008, the Court of Appeal upheld the verdict and ordered a new election within three months. President Umaru Yar’Adua directed the Speaker of the House of Assembly to take over as acting governor.

Idris was elected Governor of Kogi State again on March 29, 2008. His opponent, Abubakar Audu, disputed the by-election results, citing widespread electoral fraud, including violence and ballot box theft.

Personal Life

Idris married Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim Idris in 2017. He previously married Zainab Ibrahim Idris, who died on May 31, 2014, following a cancer-related illness.

 Death

Idris, also known as Ibro, reportedly died on Sunday, September 20, 2026. His nephew, Shehu Ahmed, verified his death to several Nigerian news agencies also reported on the situation.

Following the announcement of Idris’ death, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, former Governor Yahaya Bello, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Abdullahi Bello, and other government officials paid condolences to the family.

Onogwu Muhammed, Governor Ododo’s Special Adviser on Public Relations and former Governor Bello’s Chief Press Secretary, announced the visit.

Ododo then established a three-day mourning period in honor of the previous governor.

According to the New Telegraph, the governor ordered that the national and Kogi State flags be flown at half-mast in government offices and other recognized public institutions throughout the state during the mourning period.

The governor recognized Idris’ death as a significant loss for Kogi State and Nigeria, while recognizing his contributions to politics and industry.

According to Vanguard, Ododo recalled his last meeting with Idris in March 2024, during a political stakeholders’ visit to the Omala Local Government Area.

The Kogi administration also declared that Idris will be given a full state burial, with arrangements handled by the state administration.
