White tourist laments after buying diesel at ₦1,750 per litre in Nigeria
A white tourist travelling across Nigeria has sparked reactions online after describing the country’s fuel prices as expensive compared to what many people would expect, despite noting that diesel remains costlier in parts of Europe.
The traveller shared his experience in a viral video while refuelling his vehicle at a Nigerian filling station.
He compared the local diesel price with European rates and said the cost was high when viewed against Nigeria’s income levels.
Tourist compares Nigeria’s fuel prices with Europe
While preparing to fill his vehicle, the tourist first asked about the pump price.
“Very curious what the prices for fuel are in Nigeria because we have to fill up this big boy (car) here and here we have I think the price per litre is 1,300. That’s one US dollar per litre but we are tanking diesel. Let’s see how much goes in here.”
After being informed of the diesel price, he realised it was higher than he initially thought.
“How much is for one litre? 1,700. Oh, okay. Oh, here it doesn’t say anything.”
He later clarified the actual pump price after checking the display.
“Oh, wow. Oh, so diesel is 1,730. I’m sorry, I didn’t understand that lovely lady.”
Says fuel is expensive by Nigerian standards
Although he acknowledged that fuel is generally more expensive in Europe, the tourist argued that Nigeria’s economic realities make the cost significant for residents.
“That’s like $1.20 per litre. I think that’s pretty expensive when it comes to Nigeria. I mean in Europe which is probably like more than double the price but we cannot compare European prices with prices here in Nigeria.”
“For Nigerian standards I think that’s pretty damn expensive.”
As the litres and total amount increased on the pump, he reacted to the growing bill.
“Wow, 41, 42 litres already goes in. 72,000 already. That sounds like a lot of money.”
While counting naira notes to settle the payment, he joked about the large cash bundle before completing the transaction.
“Done. Finally done paying. It took like five minutes.”
