“What if it was something illegal?” – Man shares scary airport encounter with a Nigerian stranger

A Nigerian man has shared a concerning experience he had at an airport after a fellow Nigerian stranger approached him and asked him to help check in his luggage to avoid paying an excess baggage fee.
According to the man, he was at the airport preparing to board his 8 a.m. flight and had only a small bag with him when the stranger approached him after apparently recognising his Nigerian accent.

The stranger reportedly explained that his luggage was overweight and asked if the man could check it in under his name since he did not have a check-in bag.
“I see you don’t have a check-in bag. Can you help me check in mine? Mine is overweight and I don’t want to pay extra for luggage. I’m like, okay, I can help. But ask the woman beside me. Can I do this? Because I haven’t done it before,” he recounted.
The man said he became uncomfortable after considering the potential consequences of travelling with luggage belonging to someone he barely knew.
Although the stranger opened the bag and showed him clothes and shoes, he remained concerned that he could not know everything inside it.
“What if we land in the country we’re going to and you’re carrying something illegal? It’s going to be checked under my name. So if they stop the bag, they’re gonna find me. I’m like, this can get me in trouble,” he added.
He eventually trusted his instincts and declined to help the stranger, despite wanting to assist him with the extra luggage fee.
The incident has raised questions about whether travellers should ever accept luggage from strangers, particularly when doing so could leave them responsible for the contents.
