Transfer: Welbeck undergoes Chelsea medical before Brighton exit
Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck after the experienced forward was granted permission to undergo a medical ahead of his proposed move to Stamford Bridge.
The 35-year-old is expected to join Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Hong Kong next week before completing a two-year contract as the Blues continue reshaping their squad under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
Welbeck’s arrival reflects Chelsea’s decision to add experienced players to a squad that has largely been built around young talent over the past two seasons.
Chelsea shift recruitment strategy
Chelsea’s pursuit of Welbeck comes after club co-owner Behdad Eghbali admitted towards the end of last season that the club’s transfer strategy required a “tweak” following a disappointing campaign that ended with a 10th-place Premier League finish and no silverware.
The former Manchester United, Arsenal and Watford striker is expected to provide leadership and experience to an attack that has been one of the youngest in the division.
Chelsea have also strengthened other areas of the squad this summer, bringing in Morgan Rogers for a club-record fee, signing full-back Marco Palestra, and agreeing a deal for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, while discussions continue over a move for Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson.
Competition for places increases
Welbeck leaves Brighton after establishing himself as one of the club’s most reliable forwards.
Since joining on a free transfer from Watford in 2021, he has become the Seagulls’ leading Premier League goalscorer, registering 90 top-flight goals across 400 league appearances during his career.
His arrival at Stamford Bridge could lead to departures before the transfer window closes, with Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu among the forwards who could leave either permanently or on loan.
Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha, who joined from Strasbourg earlier this summer, is also competing for a place as Alonso continues to assess his options ahead of the new Premier League season.
