A large group of countries shares fourth place: Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, Portugal, Austria, Croatia, Norway, Ireland, and Japan, all of which offer visa-free travel to 173 countries.

Malta, Slovenia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, and South Korea come in fifth place, with access to 172 destinations each.

Romania, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Lithuania are tied for sixth place with 171 countries, with EU members retaining the right to live and work across the bloc. Cyprus and the United Kingdom are seventh, with access to 170 countries.

Canada, Liechtenstein, and New Zealand rank eighth with 169 destinations, while Iceland and Australia are tied for ninth with 168 countries.

The United States rounds out the top ten with access to 167 destinations, down one spot from a year earlier.

American passport holders can still travel to most major global destinations with little to no advance visa requirements.

India and Pakistan rank low in passport index

Outside the top ten, India is ranked 70th in the global passport index. Pakistan is ranked 42nd, but its passport holders have significantly limited travel access, with only 13 visa-free destinations available, making it one of the most restricted passports in the rankings.

The difference between the most and least powerful passports demonstrates how much a citizen’s country of birth influences their ability to travel freely around the world.
