How I get inspiration for my songs—Theophilus Sunday

Minister Theophilus Sunday is more than just a gospel singer; he is a passionate worship leader at 1Spirit, a ministry dedicated to preparing the church for the return of Jesus Christ. His worship approach combines current rhythms with historic origins, resulting in a dynamic environment in which God’s presence is palpable.

Theophilus combines traditional Igala melodies with current gospel sounds to create a musical statement that is profoundly rooted in his cultural history, notably among the Igala people of Nigeria.

Reflecting on his beginnings, Theophilus attributes his artistic career to heavenly inspiration rather than selfish ambition. A watershed moment occurred during his childhood when, enthralled by a preacher singing on television, he was motivated to commit to God.

“I recall sitting up one night as a youngster to watch a preacher minister in song. “I was overwhelmed by the Spirit, and I promised God that I would never sell my music,” he said.

Surprisingly, music was not his boyhood dream. Though he adored singing, drumming was his first true interest. In the beginning, he modestly served as a choir member before rising to prominence in 1Spirit.

“I started as a singer but became more interested in drumming. I spent a lot of my early years just serving in the choir and growing in 1 Spirit,” he explained.

Today, as the team leader of 1Spirit and the Music Director of Peculiar Church of Glory, Theophilus emphasizes that 1Spirit is more than a music platform; it is a heavenly vocation.

“OneSpirit is not a music ministry. The Father’s heart is burdened with the desire to see His church spotless, without blemish or wrinkle. “Music is simply the bait God placed within us to attract the church to this deeper calling,” he explained.

Looking back, Theophilus realizes that he faced major hurdles, particularly when in the United Evangelical Church (UEC). His unusual approach and youthful vigor did not fit the mold of the orthodox system; therefore, he sought spiritual guidance elsewhere under God’s direction.

“To be honest, my dress style and vibrant Christian lifestyle did not fit in at UEC. I wouldn’t call it a quarrel, but it was evident that God was calling me elsewhere for spiritual mentorship,” he explained.

“The voyage was not easy. He noted that despite frequent travel and misunderstandings, God continued to help him.

Despite the demands of celebrity, Theophilus remains grounded, retaining tight links with his old acquaintances, many of whom are now colleagues in ministry.

“I used to live quite casually—shorts, an easygoing lifestyle—just enjoying God freely. “Public life has placed some restrictions on me, but thankfully, many of my old friends are still very much a part of the journey and serve alongside me,” he added affectionately.
