Super Eagles still have enough room to qualify for AFCON 2027 despite Guinea-Bissau defeat
Nigeria’s route to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has become more difficult after the Super Eagles suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in Bissau.
The result leaves Éric Chelle’s side with three points from their opening two Group L matches, while Guinea-Bissau have taken an early lead with six points.

With only one qualification place available to the non-host nations in the group, Nigeria cannot afford many more dropped points.
Guinea-Bissau seize early advantage
Nigeria began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar in Uyo, while Guinea-Bissau opened with a 2-0 win over Tanzania.
The Djurtus strengthened their position with another victory on Tuesday, as Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Álvaro Djaló scored in the 3-0 win over Nigeria.
The result gives Guinea-Bissau a three-point advantage over the Super Eagles after two rounds.
The qualification equation is also different because Tanzania are one of the three hosts of AFCON 2027 and have an automatic place at the tournament.
CAF’s format means only the highest-ranked non-host nation in Group L will qualify, increasing the importance of every remaining fixture for Nigeria.
Nigeria’s remaining four matches
The Super Eagles have four matches left in the group, beginning with a double-header against Tanzania in November.
Nigeria will host Tanzania before travelling for the return fixture during the November 9-17 international window.
Their final two matches will come in March 2027, when Nigeria travel to face Madagascar before hosting Guinea-Bissau.

The final meeting with Guinea-Bissau could become particularly important if the two sides remain close in the standings heading into the last round.
What Nigeria need to do
Nigeria’s most straightforward route is to collect as many points as possible from their remaining four matches, starting with the two games against Tanzania.
Maximum points from the November double-header would give the Super Eagles a stronger platform before the decisive final two fixtures.
The March trip to Madagascar could then prove significant before Nigeria’s final group match against Guinea-Bissau.
However, the exact permutations will depend on results involving all three non-host nations. Madagascar’s results and Guinea-Bissau’s ability to maintain their winning run will also determine how much pressure Nigeria face.
The 3-0 defeat in Bissau has also left Nigeria with a substantial deficit against Guinea-Bissau in the head-to-head scoreline, making the final home meeting even more significant if both teams finish level on points.
Nigeria still have four matches to change the situation, but Guinea-Bissau’s perfect start means Chelle’s side have little room for further mistakes.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the November fixtures against Tanzania as they look to revive their qualification campaign.
