Super Eagles finally get housing, land promised by FG after 2023 AFCON silver

The Federal Government has fulfilled its pledge of housing, land allocations and national honours to members of the Super Eagles following Nigeria’s runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

Ahead of the team’s opening fixture at the ongoing AFCON, players from the AFCON 2023 squad formally received title documents for residential properties and land grants, alongside certificates confirming the national honours approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Details of the reward package

Each player was allocated a residential apartment and a plot of land. The housing units are located in Abuja and Lagos, while the land allocations are in Abuja.

The rewards were part of a post-tournament commitment made by the President in recognition of the team’s performance in January and February 2024.

The handover ceremony took place on Monday at the Super Eagles’ team hotel in Fez, Morocco, where the squad is currently based.

The exercise was led by National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko, alongside Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Musa Gusau and other senior officials.

National honours clarified

Dikko confirmed that all administrative processes for the housing, land and honours had been concluded, with official allocation letters issued to beneficiaries.

He also outlined the honours conferred, stating that most players received the Member of the Order of the Niger.

Ahmed Musa and Victor Osimhen were elevated to the Officer of the Order of the Niger, having previously held MON honours, while William Troost-Ekong received the Member of the Federal Republic following his recognition as Player of the Tournament at AFCON 2023.

NFF welcomes fulfilment

Gusau described the development as a positive signal of institutional credibility and accountability.

“The President graciously promised houses, land and national honours to the players, and we felt there was no reason to move forward without fulfilling that promise,” he said.

“This handover reflects the government’s commitment to recognising the sacrifices and achievements of our players.”
