Sunderland stun Newcastle with late derby win at St James’ Park

Sunderland sealed a dramatic 2-1 win over Newcastle United as Brian Brobbey struck a late winner in the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.
The result marks Sunderland’s first league double over their rivals since the 2014/15 season, overturning an early deficit in a fiercely contested encounter.
Newcastle strike early
Newcastle made a strong start and took the lead in the ninth minute through Anthony Gordon.
The goal followed a defensive error from Luke O’Nien, whose misplaced pass was intercepted by Nick Woltemade before Gordon finished clinically.

The hosts pushed to extend their advantage and came close before the interval when Sven Botman headed against the post from a delivery by Lewis Hall.
Late drama decides contest
Sunderland improved after the break and found an equaliser in the 57th minute. A poor clearance from goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale led to sustained pressure, with Chemsdine Talbi eventually converting after an initial effort from Brobbey was cleared off the line by Dan Burn.
The visitors continued to threaten, with Noah Sadiki missing a chance to put them ahead after directing his effort straight at Ramsdale.
However, Sunderland completed the turnaround in stoppage time. Brobbey reacted quickest after Ramsdale parried his initial shot, converting from close range to seal the win.
The victory strengthens Sunderland’s form, while Newcastle are left to reflect on missed opportunities after failing to capitalise on their early dominance.
