Spurs condemn racist abuse targeting Danso
Tottenham Hotspur have condemned what they described as “vile, dehumanising racism” directed at defender Kevin Danso following their 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.
The abuse came after a late error from Danso allowed Georginio Rutter to score a stoppage-time equaliser, leaving Spurs in the Premier League relegation zone.
Club reports abuse to authorities
Tottenham confirmed that the “significant and abhorrent” messages have been reported to police and relevant authorities, adding that action will be pursued against those responsible.
“We will push for the strongest possible action against each and every person we identify,” the club said.
“Kevin has our complete and unconditional support as a player and as a person. No-one at this club will ever stand alone in the face of this.”
The club also stressed that performance on the pitch cannot justify discriminatory behaviour.
“Nothing about form or league position can ever excuse or explain racist abuse… it will not be tolerated.”
Danso responds amid wider concern
Danso addressed the incident on social media, stating: “It doesn’t define me and won’t distract me from what is important.
“I know who I am, what I stand for, and why I play.”
The incident occurred during the Premier League’s “No Room For Racism” campaign, which aims to combat discrimination across the sport.
In a separate statement, the league reiterated its stance: “Discriminatory abuse has absolutely no place in football or wider society.”
Pattern of incidents raises alarm
The case is the latest in a series of racist abuse incidents involving Premier League players this season. Recent cases have included Antoine Semenyo, who reported abuse earlier this week, and a number of players targeted during a single weekend in February.
Those incidents involved Lutsharel Geertruida, Hannibal Mejbri, Wesley Fofana and Tolu Arokodare, with investigations ongoing.
Authorities have warned that individuals found guilty of discriminatory abuse could face bans and legal prosecution as efforts intensify to address the issue across the game.
