“She said she was just joking” — Man recounts conversation with wife that left him speechless

A Nigerian man living in the United Kingdom has ignited conversations on social media after recounting a financial disagreement with his wife over monthly upkeep despite their existing household arrangement.
According to the anonymous message shared by a relationship commentator, the man said he relocated his family to the UK after selling his house and landed properties in Nigeria. He explained that he earns £2,000 monthly after tax, while his wife, who is on a dependant visa, earns £1,700 after tax.
The man said they had agreed that his salary would cover all household bills, while his wife would pay for part of the family’s food expenses and save the rest of her income.
Husband recounts wife’s request
The man said, “as a responsible man, shouldn’t I be giving her money for her upkeep, like for hair and nails, monthly?”
He added that the remark left him speechless because, according to him, “all my salary goes to bills here in the UK, and I don’t even have anything left over to buy beer for myself.”
The writer also claimed he personally handled his wife’s job applications, prepared her for interviews and assisted with workplace training after they relocated.
Story sparks debate on marital finances
The husband further alleged that he recently declined an opportunity for his wife to secure a higher-paying civil service job through a friend, saying he feared “her behavior might worsen.”
The post has since generated mixed reactions online, with many social media users debating financial responsibilities in marriage, the management of family income abroad and whether spouses should receive personal allowances regardless of their earnings.
