“Seyi Makinde recruits 12,000 teachers in 6 years” – TESCOM

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has reportedly doubled more than the number of teachers in its secondary schools within six years, increasing the workforce from 13,730 in 2019 to 26,436 as of mid-2025.
This was disclosed by the Chairperson of the Oyo State Post Primary Schools’ Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Olubukola Oladipo, during the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
According to a statement by Governor Seyi Makinde’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the government employed 10,500 teaching and non-teaching staff during the governor’s second term alone.
Oladipo stated that in a bid to strengthen school administration across the state, four new Educational Zones were added, bringing the total to ten.
The zones now include Ibadan I to IV, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Kishi, Saki, Eruwa, and Iseyin.
She further noted the establishment of a Directorate of Pension and Post Services, aimed at enhancing support for retirees under TESCOM.
“Between 2017 and 2024, promotion exercises were successfully conducted for eligible officers. In addition, from 2024 into early 2025, the recruitment of 7,500 teaching and 3,000 non-teaching staff took place to boost student performance in both internal and external examinations,” she said.
Oladipo emphasized that this wave of employment has provided opportunities for many youths and is expected to improve living standards for the newly engaged workers.
The TESCOM boss also highlighted other initiatives, such as the continued payment of running grants to 695 public secondary schools and the facilitation of vehicle loans for staff.
She added that an electronic payment system for car loans had been introduced, ending the need for staff to travel to TESCOM headquarters to collect cheques.
In a move to improve leadership in schools, the commission reportedly plan to train all 695 principals across the state in modern school management practices
