Peter Magyar (born March 16, 1981) is a Hungarian politician and lawyer who is the president of the Tisza Party. He is Hungary’s Prime Minister after leading his party to victory in the Hungarian legislative election of 2026.
Magyar has also served as a member of the European Parliament since 2024. In the 2024 European Parliament elections, his party finished second to Fidesz, collecting about 30% of the vote, the most by any non-Fidesz party since 2006.
He identifies as a “critical” pro-European and conservative liberal. When Péter Magyar was a child, he pasted a photo of Viktor Orbán, then an anti-communist firebrand, to his bedroom wall, ecstatic about Hungary’s first democratic elections in 1990.
Decades later, he ended Orbán’s 16-year reign as prime minister in an election with a record turnout that was anticipated to alarm Russia and send shockwaves through right-wing circles across the West, including President Donald Trump’s White House.

Péter Magyar was born on March 16, 1981, in Budapest, to István Magyar and Mónika Erőss. He studied in Budapest and Humboldt University in Berlin as part of the Erasmus program before graduating from Pázmány Péter Catholic University’s Faculty of Law in 2004. He began his professional career in the Metropolitan Court and, after passing his legal exams, worked in international law.
Career
Before entering politics as a local chapter of Fidesz, an opposition party at the time, Magyar provided pro bono legal representation and support to anti-government activists during the 2006 protests.
His previous involvement in Fidesz has been defined as both “powerful insider” and “former official”. After Fidesz won the 2010 parliamentary election, he was appointed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A year later, coinciding with the Hungarian Union. During his presidency, he joined Hungary’s Permanent Representation to the EU. In 2015, he was hired by the Prime Minister’s Office.
In September 2018, he took over as head of the EU Legal Directorate at the state-owned MBH Bank. Between 2019 and 2022, he served as CEO of the Student Loan Center.
Following the 2024 European Parliament election, the Tisza Party emerged as Hungary’s main opposition party, with Magyar widely considered as its new leader.
On March 15, 2026, at the national holiday remembering the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, Magyar organised the Tisza Party’s twelfth and final massive demonstration before the parliamentary elections.
The “National March” took the same route as the party’s protest on October 23, 2025, beginning at Deák Ferenc Square and finishing at Heroes’ Square in Budapest.
Erzsébet Csézi, a singer and Tisza Party parliamentary candidate in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County’s 7th constituency, performed at the event.
During his speech, Magyar took a symbolic oath with supporters, declaring that the party was ready to govern. At the end of the event, the party’s 106 individual parliamentary candidates and several policy specialists took the platform. Magyar’s estimate is that about 500,000 people attended the demonstration.
On May 9, 2025, Prime Minister Viktor Orban delivered a speech at Tihany Abbey that became known as the “Tihany Speech”. During his speech, he announced his support for George Simion, who won the first round of the 2025 Romanian presidential election.
Hunor Kelemen, president of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), condemned Orbán’s statement and encouraged ethnic Hungarian voters in Transylvania to vote for Nicușor Dan in the second round.
In response, on May 14, 2025, Péter Magyar delivered a speech in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest, initiating the “One Million Steps” campaign. He claimed that he would walk from Budapest to Oradea (Nagyvárad), symbolically connecting Hungary and Transylvania.
Magyar arrived at Oradea on May 24, 2025, and delivered a speech in the courtyard of the Oradea Fortress, in front of the statue of Saint Ladislaus.
Magyar ran against Orbán in the elections held on April 12, 2026. Magyar won the election comfortably over Orbán. The turnout for the election was high, with more than 79% of voters participating.
