Nottingham Forest battle relegation in looming potential points deduction

Nottingham Forest are in hot water after being found guilty of breaching financial rules that could see them relegated.

The Premier League has confirmed that Nottingham Forest violated its Profit and Sustainability rules from the 2020/21 to the 2022/23 seasons.

According to these rules, clubs are not permitted to incur losses exceeding £105 million over a three-year period.

The situation is even more stringent for teams with a recent history in the English Football League (EFL).

Since their promotion in 2022, Forest have reportedly spent approximately £250 million on 43 players, with minimal income from player sales.

Although they made a significant sale to Tottenham last summer, this transaction still falls outside the current accounting period.

As a result of these breaches, Nottingham Forest could face a substantial points deduction, with the severity of the penalty to be determined by an Independent Commission.

Everton’s earlier ten-point deduction for a similar offense serves as a potential penalty and could be the same for Forest.

Nottingham Forest have issued a statement expressing willingness to cooperate with the Premier League and their confidence in a fair resolution.

Meanwhile, if Nottingham Forest were to receive a ten-point deduction, they would drop from 15th to 19th in the Premier League standings, making it a battle to pullout before the end of the season, giving that the campaign has been halved already.
